Paul Steinmetz is a lawyer by training and a career diplomat with the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry. After studying law and politics in Paris, Mr. Steinmetz started working for the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry in 1989, also in charge of the Asia and then the Latin America desks until 1993. From 1994 to 1998, he was deputy head of mission at the Embassy of Luxembourg in London. From 1998 to 2002, he served at HQ as Director for Legal and Cultural Affairs and earned a postgraduate degree in Public Administration from l’Ecole Nationale d ’Administration (ENA, Paris). He opened the first Embassy of Luxembourg in India in 2002 then served as ambassador in Japan, China and finally Greece. At the start of his professional life, Mr. Steinmetz also worked as legal advisor for the UNHCR in Geneva (1985 to 1987), as a lawyer in private practice in Luxembourg (1984 to 1989), and as a Political Advisor with the Office of the High Representative (1997, Sarajevo, former Yugoslavia) under Luxembourg’s EU Presidency.

Since 2021, he has been the Consul General in New York and Executive Director of the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office.

He is married and has two children.
